Apply double-sided tape to the bottom half of a toilet roll cylinder. Wrap gift wrapping paper, 20 cm x 15 cm, around the sticky half of the cylinder. Twist the rolled paper that overhangs the cylinder. Trim a fishtail fork at the base of the twisted paper to make the paper look like a mermaid tail. You can add a bit of glue to the twist to hold the shape.

Draw facial details near the top of the cylinder.

Punch a row of eight holes near the top edge of the cylinder, along the sides and back. Cut twenty-four strands of yarn, 20 cm in length. Bundle three yarns together, fold in half and loop through a punched hole – repeat for all the holes then smooth down the yarn. Firmly wrap an elastic band around the yarns near the fold.

Cut forty strands of yarn, 28 cm in length. Bundle the yarn, tie together in the middle and fold in half. Apply glue to the top inner edge of the cylinder. Gently push the folded yarn into the top of the cylinder. Style the yarn to cascade down the sides and back.

Glue two small shells just below the face. Glue a shell crown on the hair above the face.

You can also decorate the mermaid with sea-themed stickers and beads for a little extra oceanic bling.
